Biography
Welcome. I am Mahmudul Firoz a Mechanical Engineer, Researcher, and Educator whose work is rooted in one enduring question: How can we make energy generation fundamentally cleaner without sacrificing performance?
That question was not born in a laboratory. It was born on the streets of an industrial corridor in Bangladesh, where coal smoke and factory emissions were simply part of the air. What began as a child's unease became an engineer's mission and that mission now shapes everything I do.
Teaching
As a Senior Lecturer in Mechatronics Engineering at the World University of Bangladesh and a former Graduate Teaching Assistant at IUT, I bring both research depth and pedagogical commitment to the classroom. My teaching is grounded in Outcome-Based Education (OBE) principles I design courses not just to deliver content, but to develop engineers who can think critically about the systems they design and the world those systems affect.
Courses I teach and have taught:
| Thermal & Fluid Sciences | Heat Transfer |
|---|---|
| 1. Classical Thermodynamics | 6. Convective Heat Transfer |
| 2. Fluid Mechanics I & II | 7. Convective Heat Transfer: Phase Change and Mass Transfer |
| 3. Fluid Mechanics and Machinery | 8. Heat Transfer: Conduction & Radiation |
| 4. Heat and Mass Transfer | 9. Principle of Heat and Mass Transfer |
| 5. Heat Transfer Equipment Design | 10.Advanced Heat Transfer and CFD |
I have supported BAETE accreditation processes at IUT, including SAR preparation, CO/PO attainment analysis, CQI development, and the GAPC-3 to GAPC-4 transition — because I believe that quality engineering education requires both strong content and rigorous institutional accountability.
Research
I specialize in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Combustion Modeling, with a particular focus on emissions mitigation in large-scale thermal power systems. My researchl work at the Islamic University of Technology (IUT) centers on the numerical analysis of NOx and SOx formation in sub-critical coal-fired furnaces, examining how oxy-fuel combustion strategies can dramatically reduce harmful emissions across varying plant load conditions. This work is conducted using ANSYS Fluent and validated against real plant data ensuring that findings are not just theoretically sound but operationally relevant.
My research has been published in Fuel (Elsevier, Q1) and presented at five international conferences, including ICME 2025 and ICME 2023. I serve as a peer reviewer for leading combustion and energy journals including Combustion and Flame, Proceedings of the Combustion Institute, Combustion Science and Technology, Fuel, and Energy & Fuels.
Current research interests include:
- CFD-based emissions modeling (NOx, SOx) in coal and oxy-fuel systems
- ML in NOx, SOx Emission Prediction
- Coal, biomass, and municipal solid waste co-firing technologies
- Thermal-fluid analysis for sustainable energy systems
- HVAC optimization using green building frameworks
- Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of energy technologies
- Ultrasonic-assisted multiphase flow and metal casting
Community & Mentorship
I am the Administrator of HigherStudyAbroad — Global Hub of Bangladeshis, a volunteer-driven platform supporting over 222,000 members worldwide. For students navigating the complex terrain of global higher education often without institutional support or financial safety nets — this community provides mentorship, application guidance, and a sense of possibility. I know that terrain personally. Helping others cross it is not optional for me; it is a responsibility.
Research Group
I am actively building a research group focused on CFD-based solutions to critical energy and environmental challenges. I welcome highly motivated undergraduate students, graduate students, and early-career researchers who are passionate about thermal-fluid sciences, combustion, and sustainable energy systems.
